2010 PRISON SERVICE

ABSU Law Clinic has commenced the 2010 Prison Service work in earnest. This was preceded by the traditional Pre-Prison Visit Workshop which held on Thursday 15 July 2010 at the faculty of Law ABSU. The workshop which had in attendance The Ag. Dean of the Faculty, Barr. M. O. Unegbu, the Coordinator of the ABSU Law Clinic, Dr Sam Erugo as well as Dr Eze Ngwakwe, a staff clinician was held to prepare 500 and 400 Level Clinicians who were scheduled to embark on the prison visits to Umuahia and Okigwe Prisons as well as some select prospective student clinicians from the 300 level class.

Before the workshop, some Student Clinicians led by Orji Agwu Uka earlier paid courtesy visits on the Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, Umuahia and the Asst. Comptroller of Prisons, Okigwe in preparation for this year's prison visit. During the visits, the Clinicians advocated inter alia for increased access to the inmates for the clinicians, right to privacy for the inmates during the interview sessions, access of the records of the inmates to facilitate processing of their cases as well as improved welfare conditions for the inmates.

The facilitator at this year's workshop was the Asst. Comptroller of Prisons, Okigwe ably represented by Onywukwu M.C. ASP I, who spoke on the problems encountered by the prisons authorities in managing the inmates as well as the role of Non Governmental Agencies like the Law Clinic in enhancing Access to Justice for Prison inmates. He equally highlighted the rules and regulations guiding the prisons and what was expected of the students in the course of their visit, while assuring the Law Clinic of the continuous cooperation of the Prisons authorities towards the ABSU Law Clinic Prisons Service. There was also an exciting session of questions and reponses from the participants.

The prison visits to Umuahia and Okigwe took place on Wednesday July 21, 2010. A comprehensive report of the visit will form the basis of the next blog post.

Also coming soon is the Street Law Project of the ABSU Law Clinic which involves an Anti Sexual Harassment and Human Rights Enlightenment Campaign scheduled to kick off next week in five select secondary schools in the state including Federal Government Girls College, Umuahia, International Secondary Uturu, Fatima Technical Secondary School, Isiukwuato, Girls Senior Secondary School Umuahia and Federal Government College Okigwe.
